Description

This shepherd's pie recipe is a comforting and hearty dish made with layers of seasoned ground beef and vegetables topped with creamy mashed potatoes. It's perfect for family meals and brings everyone together around the table.

Ingredients

Scale

1.5 pounds Ground beef
1 large Yellow onion, diced
2 medium Carrots, diced
1 cup Frozen peas
3 cloves Garlic, minced
2 tablespoons Tomato paste
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 cup Beef broth
2 tablespoons All-purpose flour
1 teaspoon Fresh thyme
2.5 pounds Russet potatoes, peeled and cubed
4 tablespoons Butter
1/2 cup Whole milk or heavy cream
1 cup Shredded cheddar cheese
Salt and black pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Step 1: Prepare the Potatoes – Place cubed potatoes in a large pot, cover with cold water, and add salt. Bring to a boil, then simmer for 15-20 minutes until fork-tender. Drain and mash with butter, milk, salt, and pepper
  2. Step 2: Cook the Meat Filling – Heat a skillet over medium-high heat, add ground beef, and cook until browned. Drain excess fat, season with salt and pepper
  3. Step 3: Add Vegetables – Add diced onion and carrots to the beef, cook for 5 minutes. Add minced garlic and cook for another minute. Stir in tomato paste and cook for 2 minutes
  4. Step 4: Create the Sauce – Sprinkle flour over the meat mixture, stir well. Pour in beef broth and Worcestershire sauce, add thyme, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 5 minutes until thickened. Stir in frozen peas
  5. Step 5: Assemble the Shepherd's Pie – Preheat oven to 400°F. Transfer meat mixture to a baking dish, spread evenly, spoon mashed potatoes on top, and create texture with a fork. Sprinkle cheese over potatoes
  6. Step 6: Bake – Bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown. Let rest for 10 minutes before serving

Notes

Make sure to drain the beef well to avoid an oily filling.

Season each layer for maximum flavor.

Let the assembled dish rest before baking for better flavor melding.
