Description

This hamburger steak with onion gravy is a comforting dish that combines seasoned ground beef patties with a rich, savory onion gravy, perfect for weeknight dinners and meal prep.

Ingredients

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix gently with your hands until just combined
  2. Divide the mixture into four equal portions. Shape each into an oval patty about ¾-inch thick and make a small indent in the center of each patty
  3. Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Once hot, add the hamburger steaks and cook for 4-5 minutes per side until nicely browned. Remove them to a plate and set aside
  4. In the same skillet, add the sliced onions and reduce heat to medium. Cook, stirring occasionally, for about 10-12 minutes until the onions are soft and golden brow
  5. Sprinkle flour over the caramelized onions and stir constantly for about 2 minutes
  6. Slowly pour in the beef broth while stirring constantly. Add the thyme sprigs if using and bring to a gentle simmer
  7. Return the hamburger steaks to the skillet, nestling them into the gravy. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 15-20 minutes until the steaks reach an internal temperature of 160°F
  8. Remove the thyme sprigs, taste the gravy, and adjust seasoning if needed. Serve hot, spooning extra gravy over each portio

Notes

Choose 80/20 ground beef for juiciness.

Make sure to indent the patties to prevent puffing.

Caramelize onions slowly for best flavor.
