Ingredients
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix gently with your hands until just combined
- Divide the mixture into four equal portions. Shape each into an oval patty about ¾-inch thick and make a small indent in the center of each patty
- Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Once hot, add the hamburger steaks and cook for 4-5 minutes per side until nicely browned. Remove them to a plate and set aside
- In the same skillet, add the sliced onions and reduce heat to medium. Cook, stirring occasionally, for about 10-12 minutes until the onions are soft and golden brow
- Sprinkle flour over the caramelized onions and stir constantly for about 2 minutes
- Slowly pour in the beef broth while stirring constantly. Add the thyme sprigs if using and bring to a gentle simmer
- Return the hamburger steaks to the skillet, nestling them into the gravy. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 15-20 minutes until the steaks reach an internal temperature of 160°F
- Remove the thyme sprigs, taste the gravy, and adjust seasoning if needed. Serve hot, spooning extra gravy over each portio
Notes
Choose 80/20 ground beef for juiciness.
Make sure to indent the patties to prevent puffing.
Caramelize onions slowly for best flavor.
