The creamy mushroom sauce melds beautifully with tender hamburger steaks and perfectly cooked potatoes, making it a comforting dish that feeds a crowd.

Ingredients

Scale

2 pounds Ground beef (80/20 blend)
1/2 cup Breadcrumbs
1 large Egg
1 medium Onion, finely diced
1 teaspoon Garlic powder
1 teaspoon Salt
1/2 teaspoon Black pepper
2 cans (10.5 oz each) Condensed cream of mushroom soup
1 cup Sour cream
1 cup Beef broth
8 oz Sliced mushrooms
4 medium Russet potatoes, thinly sliced
2 cups Shredded cheddar cheese
2 tablespoons Fresh parsley, chopped

Instructions

  1. Step 1: Preheat your oven to 375°F. Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish generously with butter or cooking spray
  2. Step 2: In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, diced onion, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Mix gently with your hands until just combined
  3. Step 3: Form the mixture into 6-8 oval patties, approximately 1/2-inch thick
  4. Step 4: In a large skillet over medium-high heat, sear the patties for 2-3 minutes per side until browned
  5. Step 5: While patties rest, prepare the sauce. In a medium bowl, whisk together cream of mushroom soup, sour cream, and beef broth until smooth and creamy
  6. Step 6: Layer half the sliced potatoes in your prepared baking dish. Season with salt and pepper. Arrange the seared hamburger steaks over the potatoes. Add the sliced mushrooms around and over the steaks
  7. Step 7: Pour the creamy sauce evenly over everything. Layer the remaining potato slices on top, then pour any remaining sauce over them
  8. Step 8: Cover tightly with aluminum foil. Bake for 60 minutes
  9. Step 9: Remove foil and sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese over the top. Return to oven uncovered for 15 minutes until cheese melts and turns golde
  10. Step 10: Let rest for 10 minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh parsley

Notes

For a gluten-free version, use gluten-free breadcrumbs and check your soup labels carefully.

You can replace cream of mushroom soup with cream of chicken or cream of celery soup.
